Regional Accent Modification

What is a regional dialect or accent?

client pictureA speech pattern that alerts the listener that you are from a specific region within the United States. It may include non-standard pronunciation, grammar, resonance, pitch, rate of speech, and differences in vocabulary. A few examples of regional dialects include the New York and Southern American dialects.

What is Standard American English (SAE)?

Standard American English (SAE) is the "accent without an accent," a way of speaking which is identifiably American, but does not distract the listener with regional variations. It is the type of pronunciation that is most widely used and accepted by educated speakers across the country. Also called American Broadcaster English, SAE is used by the majority of radio and television personalities throughout the United States. NYSS will train you to speak using SAE.

What are some characteristics of the New York accent?

  1. Non-standard pronunciation, such as
    • Hard "G" sound - "Long Island" is pronounced "Long Guyland"
    • "Aw" sound is prolonged - "talk" is pronounced "tAWWK"
    • Dropping "R" sounds - "morning" is pronounced "mawning"
    • Adding "R" sounds - "idea" is pronounced "idear"
    • Dropping final consonants - "sold" is pronounced "sole" "want" is pronounced "wan"
    • Dropping the "g" endings - "calling" is pronounced "callin"
    • Substituting "d" or "t" for "the"- "those" is pronounced "doze"
    • "Ask" is pronounced "axe"
  2. Non-standard resonance - The focus of speech is on the lower lip and jaw, resulting in a heavy sound.
  3. Fast rate of speech
  4. Hypernasality ("talking through your nose")

When should you consider accent modification?

If your accent interferes with your ability to communicate successfully in social or professional situations or is preventing you from achieving your goals.

We also offer small group classes - for increased cost-effectiveness

In our group accent modification classes, we use the same methods as in our individual programs. The small group programs are substantially more cost-effective than individual instruction. Do you know a group of individuals who would like to reduce their New York dialects? NYSS will arrange a special class schedule any time during the year.

A regional accent modification course at NYSS includes:

  • client pictureA comprehensive speech assessment by a licensed speech-language pathologist
  • An individualized program based on an analysis of your speech
  • All instructional materials
  • Daily practice exercises for you to complete at home
  • A final assessment to measure your success
